Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Chronograph “Discontinued”

Patek Philippe Annual Calendar Chronograph “Discontinued”

£56,500.00

Annual Calendar wristwatches are a hugely useful tool, and when being paired with a Chronograph mechanism like they have been with this Patek Philippe complication, there really aren’t many watches that can rival its offering to the wearer. Generally, complicated Patek Philippe watches are made in precious metal, both due to the expensive qualities associated with gold and metals alike, as well as to follow the vast history of the brand in producing much higher quantities of precious metal watches over their steel offerings. It is for this exact reason that records within the auction world are often made with vintage steel Patek Philippe’s (such as steel 1518’s). In 2006, Patek launched reference 5960, which at the time was a huge milestone for the brand given it was their first automatic in-house chronograph movement. With its flyback functionality and simultaneous annual calendar offering, it really was a watch that was fitted to a huge range of individuals. Cased initially in platinum, and then in rose gold, the watch was no doubt a popular one. However, when Patek Philippe served a hugely surprising move in 2014, but replacing the precious metal offerings with the stainless steel 5960/1A-001, it really got the world talking. With a case diameter of 40.5mm and a thickness of just 13.53mm, the watch wears extremely well on the wrist and far superior to its leather-strap wearing precious metal alternatives thanks to its expertly-designed five-piece stainless steel integrated bracelet. Available initially with a white dial only, a black dial (ref. 5960/1A-010) joined the lineup shortly afterwards in 2017. Albeit regarded as rarer given the shorter production period, it’s the white dial which is seen as both the original and more universally wearable. The perfectly bright white symmetrical dial is something of a masterpiece, with three apertures across the top arc of the dial displaying the day, date and month, a power reserve indicator sat below, and then the chronograph counter placed at the 6 o’clock position (with a subtle day/night indicator placed within). The overall combination of highly-polished stainless steel, a bright white dial, and dark black details throughout the tracking, dial displays and text, and finally bright red details across two of the chronograph hands (and number “1” on the date wheel), make for an incredibly sporty and modern piece, whilst expressing and offering the core DNA of Patek Philippe.
