Albeit not at a size which is often considered when one is asked to picture Patek Philippe’s Nautilus wristwatches, it’s safe to say the “Jumbo alternative” with the 3800 has every attractive asset of a Nautilus, just at a smaller size. Introduced in the early 1980’s (in which competing brands were also releasing similar watches), the 3800 was modelled almost identically on the previously-introduced 3700 (which was launched in 1976) and became a very strong alternative to Patek’s smaller-watch-loving clients of the world. These matching assets to its larger alternative include the water-resistant, porthole-like case design and a gorgeously-made integrated bracelet. At the arguably-more wearable size of 37.5mm, the watch retains the vertically-lined dial synonymous with Nautilus models, as well as luminous-filled indexes and hands, whilst tying in the date aperture at 3 o’clock perfectly.

Condition Report:

Rarely found in such condition, as well as as a full set itself, this 3800 is a complete set offering. The dial itself has been maintained fabulously with an outstanding blue metallic finish throughout, whilst the luminous within the indexes surrounding the dial have aged to a creamy tone. There is little discrepancy between the luminous on these hands and that on the dial itself, and the overall aesthetic is something which must be seen to be appreciated. Believed to have been polished just a couple of times in its two-decade lifespan, the case and bracelet of the watch are thick and lovely, and the bracelet shows almost zero signs of any stretch. Fully complete with all its original array of accessories, the watch is paired by its dark-red leather box, spare links, leather folder, booklets and of course its Certificate of Origin, stating its sale from 2001.
